Yes, this is often the case, but not always. I arrived into ORD on Sunday morning from YYZ (547) and arrived early and went straight into our gate, arriving 25 minutes early. Of course, last week, arrived into ORD about 30 minutes early, then went to the penalty box and got to the gate about 3 minutes early

Definitely, they should. IME, I certainly don't remember a time when I was in the penalty box and some sort of announcement wasn't made.

Interesting....everytime I've seen a gate change, there is always lots of groans from pax inside the terminal when they are told. Just saying...
