You and your friend are on different records, so your situation is not the same as the OP's.
If both pax are on the same record, they can stay that way until the first upgrade becomes available. (One has to make it clear that upgrading only one is acceptable, then one has to check in regularly because the automatic system generally tries to upgrade both or neither.) To process only one upgrade the records must be split which is why the first should go to the non-status companion. Once split, the wait-listed EXP maintains priority and better seating options that would be unavailable to a waitlisted person with no status.
