Not at all, "my friend" is actually my 70+ year old father. And I know if his upgrade doesn't clear then I'm the one going to his seat.
This time probably all you can do is hope your father clears, but next time, upgrade your companion first. That way, if only one upgrade clears, your 70+ year old father will be seated in business class and you will still be able to choose any open coach seat you wish.
