We sat for a full 30 minutes on the taxiway, near the gate, in a parking area. We weren't told anything until I rang the call button at the 30 minute mark.

The FA called the pilot to ask what the deal is, still no announcement, and then we taxi to the gate. Again, no announcement until the FA said "sorry about the delay folks, your carry-on....."

Since we sat for 30 minutes I would have expected a "they don't have a parking spot for us" announcement but apparently that's not the protocol.

Should they tell us what is going on?
I see this more often than not. Would it hurt the airline to "REQUIRE" pilots to update pax every 10-15 minutes about what is going on? It does happen sometimes, but after all these years of flying, I attribute the right behavior to the good nature of the pilot vs something that is actually proper to do and is/should be required by the company.
