Foursquare tells you if you're too far away from the site to receive credit for a checkin. It varies quite a bit for me. Sometimes I'm a block away and I don't receive credit, other times I'm more than a mile away and I do. Not sure of how Topguest awards points but I imagine it would be very similar.
