i got the point that AA fare "could" be higher in your example. However, I am so flexible (time and place), I only choose the flight that AA to be nearly the lowest price. So it doesn't bother me at all. If the price is high, I skip.
The reason of the high price was (i think) due to many people flying AA, which boost up the load factor.
