I would hazard to say that the "best option" is the SQ (Singapore Airlines) flight from EWR, so EWR-SIN-BKK. That is their all C class A345 service to SIN and then connecting to a regional flight.
As far as I know, this SQ flight is (still) not an option for Star Alliance award trips. I think SQ was banning awards to Star Alliance members in their newer Business Class and First Class seats/Suites, such as they have on the A345's, 777-300ER's, and A380's.

If that's not the case anymore, I want to know!

I think he could fly SQ's 747 (in any class) from JFK that stops in FRA and then SIN, then catch the regional back to BKK.
