AKL-OOL target maket is the average kiwi family going on a short hoilday in the Gold Coast. They are likely to have young kids & a family income of around $80,000.
The target market of the airline may have been that Kiwi family going to the Gold Coast, but if so that was dumb planning, because we all know that Brisbane's most profitable market sector is outbound long-haul Australians not inbound short-haul Kiwis. The Gold Coast has 40% of Greater Brisbane's population and if the airline bothered to target its outbound longhaul market it would clean up.
Secondly, when I have a trip to make to Los Angeles or San Francisco I go for who has the best product at the best price and most convenient frequency. If either I or my employer is willing to pay for a better product why should I settle for an inferior one?
I will fly Air NZ when it offers a compelling case for my custom. 95% of my Air NZ flying is long-haul, but all of that requires Tasman sectors to connect at AKL. And I simply refuse to pay a Business Class or Premium Economy fare and then be seated in Economy. It's not going to happen. Goodbye!
