You wouldnt be able to do anything with your US miles and upgrades on the partner airlines until US does officially join in with the *A upgrade program. When that does happen though, youll have to be on the most expensive coach tickets to be able to upgrade.

other than that, i do know that many of the foreign airlines offer day of departure type cash upgrade programs.
