I don't see any reason to avoid that path if you have tried contacting and it has been 4 weeks

+1. You've done everything you can reasonably do. If you present these same facts to your credit card company, they should be ready and willing to help you. AA will likely respond to them quite quickly.
I had a similar issue with a DL ticket last fall. Due to a cancellation the flight actually got exchanged to a US ticket by DL. Given the circumstances and timing I ended up just canceling which DL said I could do for no fee. Took several weeks/months to finally track down at least a receipt confirming it was supposed to have been refunded--thanks very much to a kind sky club agent. Still, weeks later nothing to my CC. Finally contacted AMEX about the issue--fully refunded in less than a week
