The cautionary bit is that when PeoplExpress collapsed BTV was no longer an LCC station, fares went up, the cost advantage narrowed, and the Canadian traffic largely dried up. Something the BLI airport commission might keep in mind as it plans its expansion. Never spend public money based on what you think a private enterprise might do.
Fast forward to the present and Allegiant has recreated this scenario for the Quebecois with service to several destinations in Florida. However, they fly out of Plattsburgh, NY which is even closer to Montreal than BTV via a direct transborder freeway.
