Was this intentional? I would count your blessings and hope to keep the miles you already earned. Throwaway ticketing is VERY frowned upon and has resulted in the suspension of AAdvantage privileges for others in the past!

This has bugged me for a while. If my plans change and I can't pre-identify where I want to us the ticket in the future, I am penalized by completely losing the full value of the ticket. However, the rules say I am not allowed to do this. By the rules, I am contractually bound to rebook the flight and pay the change fee and physically take the flight that I rebook. If I fail to do so, I have violated the ticket agreement.
What do I do if I have no future flight plans?
Is that right/fair?
