From another Sunnyvale resident,

Fly from SFO and take the Flagship 767 transcon in P to JFK. This way, you'll have the noise cancelling headsets on all of the AA portion of the trip. At JFK, you can fly a 777 with suites across the pond to LHR and catch the IB flight to BCN. IIRC, the BA Spain flights are IB codeshares.

BTW, I did Spain for my honeymoon last November. I bought Y tickets and upgraded using VIPOWs to MAD. (Had to earn miles on the flights.) Ended up going all over Spain using the oneworld Visit Europe pass. Have a blast. I know me and the wife did.

Consider a oneWorld award in F, which will run you 150k miles per person.

From SJC, you'd want to do SJC-LAX-LHR-BCN, with the LHR-BCN leg on BA.

On the return, do BCN-LHR on Iberia and the same route back.

Alternatively, do BCN-CDG-BOS-SJC on the return and stopover in Paris for a couple of days.
