Dynamic currency conversion to third currency

At check-out during a recent stay at the Westin Chosun Seoul, the hotel tried to charge my GBP credit card with the Korean Won amount converted to US dollars. I spotted what they were doing and they said they would charge me in KRW instead. They even crossed out the US$ amount on the receipt.

I now see that I have indeed been charged in US$, with about a 2% loss on the KRW-to-US$ conversion. I shall of course take this up with the hotel to get it fixed, not least because the more hassle people give them, the less likely they are to indulge in these scam practices.

What is odd is that this is the first time I've seen dynamic currency conversion being done to a third currency, i.e. a currency that is neither the hotel currency nor the credit card account currency. Anyone else exerienced this?

Even more oddly, at a second stay at the same hotel four days later, I was charged in KRW without any problem.
