You might try asking the FA when you first board and are at the front of the plane that you are pretty sure you need an extender, and see if they'll just hand it to you (make it seem like you are trying to save them a trip later). I've often thought of trying to buy my own extender from somewhere but not all buckles are the same. Of course, this does circumvent the reason why they supposedly don't want "people of size" in the exit rows.
I've "borrowed" extensions from two carriers that I fly frequently in the States. You're right in that they are not compatable. I'm going to take along one of my "borrowed" belts to see if it may fit. Regarding my agility to follow instructions if in an emergency, I feel quite capable as I've logged more miles than most FA's and know the drill backwards and forwards. If I didn't think I was capable, I'd never asked to be seated there to begin with. I just wouldn't jeopardize the safety of other passengers. The aircraft AC uses on the PVG route is the 767-300 - not my favorite plane but it will have to do.
