Maybe others have had a different experience, but this has been mine since the credit crisis. I took the trouble to fill out the form they wanted so they could get my tax returns from the IRS, and my household has 8 AmEx cards with limits ranging from $15,000-$50,000. They also turned my younger daughter down because she never filed a tax return, even though my older daughter still has the AmEx she got 3 years ago with no income at all (we used household income instead). The rules have changed and CC companies want to see proven income, not "liar loans". The only way they can tell the difference is by requiring the documentation at a certain risk level, in this case $25,000.
I'd be happy to fill in a form giving AX access to my IRS records. They wanted me to make all the copies of hundreds of pages and mail them in. As I have a 25 year credit history with AX of always paying in full on time $10K-$20K monthly balances, it would have been nice if they told me about the threshold amount that triggers the tax return request. I would have only asked for a $5k increase.
