It's routine here in the US and throughout most of the world for a hotel to require a credit card guarantee to hold a confirmed arrival booking, especially if you plan to arrive after 4 or 6pm local time (depending on the property).

I asssume it's as safe as giving your credit card number to a merchant when you make a purchase.
