Onboard upgrades are very rare on DL. Excellent GA at MEM on Monday called me up to the podium to ensure I didn't board and lose my spot, since I was definitely going to clear.
2 months ago, I was flying award (my first DL award flight since I rarely use my miles on myself) and was surprised to find out I wasn't on the upgrade list because of the no upgrade on award tix policy (I think it has just changed for the better very recently). I made some comments to the GA about how I miss NW's old policy and boarded to my coach seat. Then before the gate closed, the GA came onboard and moved me up to 1A.
