You are right. It rarely happens. "Often" was most definitely an overstatement . However, there have been a number of stories about dead/mishandled animals in the news lately (a plane-full of dead dogs on AA and that missing DL dog in MEX come to mind). I, personally, would never check a small dog (not much choice when it comes to big dogs).

There is definitely no doubt that dogs are better behaved than most pax, and I refuse to entertain the thought of anything to the contrary
