Thanks for the tip. I did try using the multicity tool, but still got the same error message. Anyway, as mentioned above, I managed to book the ticket on Orbitz.

Incredible to me that something as simple as SFO-JFK-IAD-JFK-SFO should require this sort of extra effort.
