Maybe I can pack the box in my suitcase -or buy an inexpensive that fits the suitcase -- and use a collapsible suitcase for my clothes. The monitor is staying there with a friend...see paragraph above for the reason.

if i read this right(i do not see reason in paragraph above) you are smuggling this baby in, and attempting to avoid duty.
go to an apple store to get an oem shipping box, or,
strip it down to a bare monitor. go to some poster store, and get a picture. attach it to the front of the monitor. have the frame store pack it for you. get all the logo and id off it first. (like a picture of obama and sign it)
insure it.
