good that you have the original box and where i shipped my folks their 20" imac (basically a monitor with a foot), i would recommend doing what it did and pack/wrap some towels, bubble wrap or closed cell foam around the monitor or placing your padding between the screen side of the monitor and the inside of the box to protect the screen
Good idea! Just make sure that the padding is compressible so that when the luggage handlers toss a 70lb titanic brand suitcase on top of it in the hold it flexes and doesn't put excess pressure on the glass. I note that in many of the original boxes (even for large screen TVs) they seldom use 'filler' but just position the monitor in the middle of the box with styrofoam placers on each corner.
