good that you have the original box and where i shipped my folks their 20" imac (basically a monitor with a foot), i would recommend doing what it did and pack/wrap some towels, bubble wrap or closed cell foam around the monitor or placing your padding between the screen side of the monitor and the inside of the box to protect the screen
