The only time "direct flights" irks me is when the plane actually changes on a direct flight. (i.e. it doesn't match the IATA definition above.) I don't mean as a one-time operational item. Rather, flights such as AA154, NRT-ORD-BOS:

It bugs me that airlines market flights like this as direct just be using the same flight number. A plane change is required, so it's really a connection.
I do not know how this definition was allowed to evolve. It is a connection to different planes with the same flight number. The fact that the airlines are allowed to make people believe that they are on a direct flight is insulting.
