In the recent DOT statistics, AA has been at the bottom half of the list. And based on my experience in 100+ segments a year, I'd place them there too. Just sayin'

United has been #1 in this department in 2009 and 2010 (on-time arrivals). They place a huge emphasis on making sure boarding commences at least 30 minutes before departure, as well as having the GA's immediately document delayed flights to get the "individual" problems resolved on the spot.

I think a good question would be--why does AA struggle with this?
