SW Trains fined me once for trying to buy a ticket. I'd fallen asleep on the express and missed my stop (Putney) so when I got off at Richmond I diligently went over to the inspector and told him I'd missed my stop and I needed to buy a ticket back to Putney, as my Oyster was only for zones 1-2. He told me that I was travelling without a ticket and would have to pay the appropriate fine, I let him know in no uncertain terms it was the most moronic thing I had ever heard, especially given that if I had found the conductor on the train there would have been no fine.
