Its also a harder item to steal as it is so large. I would also look at FedEx and UPS, especially if you are going to be charged by the airline to carry on an extra bag, the opportunity cost may not be so high to ship it separately.
agreed on both points and i know it's hindsight, but moving and/or shipping a computer, a monitor and/or stereo equipment/other medium to large electronic items are the sole reasons i keep the original box until the unit dies
