Question regarding SWU: I am 1K, flying DEN-SFO-PVG (Q fare) and returning HKG-SFO-DEN (W fare) in mid October. I purchased a couple months ago and have been waitlisted for the the SWU ever since.

I elected to only apply the SWU to the international portions of the flight SFO-PVG and HKG-SFO. I would prefer not to use the SWU for just the flights to/from SFO, if I don't get upgraded on the Tranpac portions.

Is there any disadvantage to breaking it up this way? I want to make sure I'm not putting myself at a disadvantage for the upgrade.

Any advice would help.
