I've cleared after check-in several times. I usually just trot over to the RCC a few hours before the flight and ask where my name is on the wait list. Frequently I've had them indicate I've cleared and had them invite me to enjoy the club for a little longer. :-)

For UDU I would say that my ratio is 70% of flights clear at the 72 hour window. Of the 30% wait listed it's probably about 50/50 ratio.
