If their upgrades do not clear, they will be charged $50 each for the day pass to use the club (a double bummer). I wouldn't recommend this, would suggest that they use the $100 plus what they would normally spend for a dinner in Europe and have an extra-nice dinner one evening instead.
I totally agree on not spending the money. It's a cash bar for alcohol and the food of substance is on a pay basis as well. I would never pay for access. Also T8 at JFK is very nice and there is generally (IMO) quite a bit of comfortable seating down by the gate areas. There is also a fairly well know steak house, forget which one.
