I actually didn't mind Manila. Was trying to figure out where to go for a few days last year and that was the spot on the map I picked.

I had a couple of days there. First day wandered around the park and Intramuros which I really enjoyed (don't pay for the horse ride as they just walk right past the front entrance and don't really take you inside!). Hot but worthwhile.

2nd day was Mall of Asia and the Green belt shopping centre (plus another couple across the road). Some good shopping at pretty decent prices. Definitely cheaper than HK.

Food was very good and again reasonably priced.

Easy to get around as most people speak english and are friendly.

Biggest downside was annoying taxi drivers who refused to use the meter (just get out) or ones that strangely don't have change at the end of the trip. Usual con story though so nothing to unexpected. Found it was easiest just to get the hotel to wave down a taxi as then the meter was always used.

Also avoid the horse and carriages as mentioned above. They really are just out their for the tourists and will try and rip you off switching the currency they quoted in, threatening to take you to their boss etc if you don't pay. Again just the normal thing you get and nothing to be worried about if you're aware of it (so if you choose to do it then you know what you're in for).

Overall I thought Manila was good and I'm glad I went.
