JDiver's point that it will vary by property is important.
One cannot count on status being HHonored. I've had more than one hotel manager tell me "we do not upgrade award stays."
OTOH, the Disneyworld Hilton upgraded us to a junior suite on a 7-day award stay in January 2010, and gave us breakfast vouchers, and a nice gift basket of snacks.
Go figure.
