Dear Mr. LaChargers:

We have received your refund request on behalf of our mutual customer in reference to ticket numbers xxx.

United offers customers with confirmed Business Class international tickets on United an opportunity to receive a complimentary upgrade on United's domestic two class cabin flights.

Upgrades are subject to the availability of First-Class seats. .When space is not available in the First-Class cabin, and the guest travels in economy class, no refund is applicable.

We hope that your questions regarding this matter have been addressed, and we look forward to serving future travel plans of our mutual customers.

Sincerely,

Wow! I would not be happy with this email. Unfortunately, the guy answering your email may be right based on the technicalities of the fare if it is in business, maybe you should address your concern to customer service? Especially since you had a confirmed seat in F but were only accomdated in Y through no fault of your own. I think they would understand and offer some compensation.
