I often return from vacation with beer, both canned and bottled, in checked baggage.

The only packing tip I have other than those already given is that it might be best not to pack beer cans in a suitcase that is jammed-full. Cans are probably less likely to rupture if they're well-padded, but left a bit of room to move. It's not all that tricky an equation, though. I have yet to lose a can.
