To answer a couple of your questions:
1. It is always good to sign up for FF programs. Try and fly the same airline all the time to maximize the miles that they earn. You will still get miles for Orbitz etc. bookings.
2. Would probably suggest US Airways because they fly non-stop from PHX to MCI. Can also get miles in their US account if they fly UA or CO.
