I'd rather have CBP be tough about screening vs. the other way around.
If people are that upset about CBP screening there's a great solution called Global Entry.

Crossing into Canada by car now takes a bit more time than it used to. Once upon a time, they would just wave you through.... Now they want to talk to you for a few minutes --- where are you from, where do you work, how long will you be here, do you have anything to protect yourself.
Given what happened on that A330 that came into DTW on Xmas day, I have no problem with this.
