At no point the cruiseline Holland America ever asked to see our onward travel document upon disembarkation in Rome. I dont even remember we need to go through Italian immigration office when we disembark at Rome. I only recall we the passengers all disembarked as being called by our pre-allocated time slot to proceed to the gangway and off we went. We may have passed passport control but seriously I dont remember and hubby just confirms that we never do - we just walk off!
Come to think about that, our other Transatlantic cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to Barcelona also did not have any kind of verification of onward travel document, nor going through any passport control upon arrival at Barcelona. We also just walked right off the ship at disembarkation.
On top of that, we have taken inter-country flights among many European countries including Shengen countries to Non-Shengen countries and vice versa - NEVER ONCE any European airlines have asked to see Onward travel documents.
We tend to look-up and quote Timatic, but there is actually a 'full text' version of Timatic. Among other things, it deals with exceptions such as seamen, military traveling on orders and I believe cruise ships.
