Sounds like the agent didn't want to work too hard.
This is exactly what I was trying to get him to do, but to no avail. The room would have cost ~$200, and I really didn't want to be paying that when I have 500K+ points just sitting there.

I did get my points back, but the experience was definitely bad, and I would think Marriott would at least try and apologize for the clerk's incompetence, and me having to go elsewhere.
