Setting aside French Amex card issues, what you say is almost true. There is a marginal exception: if you qualify for Gold or higher in the first 3 months of the year, then your miles will be alive until the end of the following year, which means that you could have a life span higher than 20 months (but lower than 24 months): if you were to qualify for Gold by Jan 10, 2011 and not fly anymore, your miles would be alive until 31st Dec 2012, with therefore a life of 23 months and 11 days.
But clearly this is an exception of little significance.
That aside, saying that your miles do not expire while you are elite is a truism: it is equivalent to saying something like 'if you are 23 year-old today, then in twelve months time you will be 24': technically true but adding strictly nothing and, as such, an empty statement.
