Yes, I was supposed to attend a meeting in Hiroshima-ken one year, and the most affordable flight was to NRT via SFO, so I bought a JR Pass.

Only I ended up not going to the meeting, because I spaced out and brought an expired passport, which I didn't discover till I was at SFO.

As things worked out, nobody was available to express me my valid passport in time to make the meeting, so I had to cancel the SFO-NRT portion and go back home. I received a refund on my pass minus about $25/
