I have used AE many times in Europe. Car usually was through Avis or Hertz. Usually one way rental between countries. Price always right. Car agencies can screw-up (e.g. manual instead of automatic). Toll-free number to call back to USA to AE. They are easy to deal with, and ultimately make things right.
I have rented with them a couple of times they have nice deals with their own cdw, but please read your definite lease contract from the actual rental agency (i.a. Hertz etc.) carefull on local conditions, such as windscreen, fuel surcharge, additional drivers etc. These often seem to differ with your voucher from AE.
