and same for the outbound flight. Wondering why the flight was ineligible? Had I known this, I would have added the miles to my AA mileage instead.
Is it too late to add to AA? I still have the ticket stubs.

AA flights UK - USA are ineligible for BA miles.
BA flights UK - USA are ineligible for Aadvantage.
As for getting them credited now to AA, I'd say worth a shot!
