Are 3Ps exempt from domestic mileage upgrade co-pay?

says all elites are exempt from the co-pay, but also defines what is meant by elite (2P, 1P, 1K, GS).

so not totally clear to me. Anyone wiht knowledge about whether one gifts 3P status and that person can then use their miles to confirm a domestic upgrade without the $50 co-pay?
