The advantage would be credit card / credit line management. Not sure how long it would take for the refund credit to post, but if you needed to purchase the alternate ticket, then you could have two full-priced ticket charges outstanding on your account for a period of time. It also reduces the number of transactions on your credit card -- instead of 3 for purchase/refund/purchase, you only have 2 -- purchase/fare difference. Some people might care about that.
