Actually for me, the difference between whether I choose a point to point fare or a pass is this thing in bold mainly.. if I am able to plan ahead (which I normally need to because of related dependencies) and I am able to buy more than 1 week in advance, we get good fares many times..If its short notice, many times the passes do make much more sense..
