That link is for upgrading a paid stay with Starpoints. I think the OP wants to book an upgraded room with all Starpoints and no cash. SPG has two different ways to use Starpoints to get an upgraded room:
1.
Book with extra Starpoints.
This (currently) has to be done over the phone. Hotels can block certain rooms from being redeemed as awards on certain dates (unlike the no-blackouts policy on standard rooms) so any given room isn't necessarily available for Starpoints. But it's easy to call and ask.
This is described in the second sentence of the second paragraph of footnote 2 (seriously) on the
Free Nights page:
Upgraded rooms, including upgrades based on size, view, services, suites, are available at a higher Starpoints cost, as determined by each property, and must be booked through your local customer contact center.
2.
Reserve a paid stay, then add Starpoints for the upgrade.
This has a few important conditions:
- The stay has to be on a BAR, RACK, COR, or SET rate. Basically only corporate (COR/SET) or refundable (BAR)* rates qualify. (BAR rates show up as Best Available Rate or Le Meridien Passport.) Prepaid (Book Now And Save, Reserve & Relax) rates, package rates, and promotions like Better Tomorrows (40–50% off) or Starpicks don't qualify.
- The upgrade must be requested no earlier than five days before the stay begins.
On the other hand, the original paid stay should still earn Starpoints and a stay credit.
This feature of the SPG program is described on the
Room & Suite Upgrade page at the link in the previous post.
(I'm not sure how to search for this here, since “Starpoints” + “upgrade” pulls up just about every SPG thread ever.)
Anyway,
poortripplanner, welcome to FlyerTalk and enjoy your upgraded Starwood room!
