A final follow-up, hopefully of use to future travelers considering the train to Chiang Mai...

Our experience using Traveller2000 was excellent - I highly recommend them. All of our communications received prompt reply and our tickets were waiting for us, booked as requested, at our hotel in BKK. Their service fee was only 200 THB/ticket.

The train journey itself was uneventful. By no means luxurious - we found the first class sleepers comfortable and clean. As expected, despite an on-time departure from Bangkok we arrived about 2 hours late in Chiang Mai the following morning.
