I'd agree with the above - always go for the right hand side on an LHR approach.
If you take a look at
http://www.flightradar24.com/ you can see what they're up to today - zoom in on London, click on a plane that's on its final approach, and you'll be able to see what path they've taken. This morning, around half of them have approached from the north-west, and done a turn roughly above Victoria Park. (And I can tell you they're doing that today, because the turn's quite loud from my flat...)
