I think this was quite a stupid choice. CX has already been not so happy with their B777-200's. They would like to use the B777-200ER to replace the A340-300's.
Well, the market demand is huge for HKG-PVG and HKG-TPE. CX needs more metals or they risk losing those customers to competitors. It's not about what they like, but about the ability to get more people to fly with them in a revived regional air traffic demand.
