Out of curiousity, what would ever be the advantage of option 2 (canceling and retaining the credit) over option 3 (canceling and refund)? Even outside of the 24 flexibility, I can't think of a reason I would prefer credit over having a refund. For business I would have to explain that on an expense report (no thank you), and for personal travel I would always rather have the money in my pocket.
Zero, as option 2 still comes with a change fee when you rebook the flights.
There are probably some sneaky ways where option 2 is helpful (booked via someone else's dime, and then cancelled to book your own flight), but apart
from that, zero advantages.
